Nave's Topical Bible was originally produced by Orville J. Nave, A.M., D.D., LL.D. (1841-1917) while serving as a Chaplain in the United States Army. He referred to this work as "the result of fourteen years of delightful and untiring study of the Word of God."
"The object of this book is to bring together in cyclopedic form and under familiar headings all that the Bible contains on particular subjects. The subjects formulated are of practical value to every profession and to all who desire to consult the Bible." —Orville J. Nave, 1905.
Because Nave's groups verses by "idea" (or "topic"), it offers a better overview of relevant Scriptures than a concordance, which only lists or indexes verses according to specific words. It also brings to light biblical "concepts", showing verses together that deal with a subject, even when the word is not in the text. For example,
Ten Commandments does not appear in the Concordance, but a survey of the topic in Naves not only gives the passage in Exodus 20, but also dozens of other citations
explicity stated or implied, plus references to see Adultery, Children, Citizens, Homicide, Instruction, Minister, A Sacred Teacher, Obedience, Enjoined, Servant, Theft, Wife and Women.
Topics - 28,000 subjects and more than 100,000 scripture passages referenced.
