The book of James is unlike any other book in the New Testament. While written as a letter to Jewish Christians scattered throughout the world, it lacks a cohesive argument and flow of thought. Rather, it reads more like a compilation of short sayings and snippets of instruction. James is a much loved book because it’s so practical in nature, but it is also controversial in its presentation of the tension between salvation by grace alone and works which are a part of the Christian life. Martin Luther struggled with the message of James and thought that it should not be included in the canon of Scripture. What about you?
